Sea Turtles are awesome creatures and makes for a fun jigsaw puzzle to construct. Living in North Palm Beach, Florida has given us the opportunity to see these great creatures in person. I have seen them while boating on the ocean, as well as at the local Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. We also participated in the Turtlefest 2014 with one of my other companies, by creating a set of Cornhole Boards featuring the Loggerhead Turtle.

It is really neat to see ocean creatures on the inter-coastal where we live. We have seen many dolphins, where they normally swim in pairs breaking the surface to take a breath. While walking along our normal path, we got to see the dolphins jumping out of the water like they do at the shows. They jumped out of the water about 8' several times.

My wife has also seen manatees several times while walking. These aren't the best pictures, but they are still pretty cool.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon, which has been in production since the late '70's is one of my favorite aircraft, along with the Mustang and the Corsair from the WWII era. This jigsaw puzzle, F-16 Fighting Falcon reminded me of instrument ground school in Fort Wayne, Indiana. One evening, Kathy, our instructor, asked if we had ever seen night takeoffs of the local Air National Guard 122 Fighter Wing, also known as the 'Blacksnakes'? She said we will take a break about 7pm and go watch the afterburner take-offs. As I am writing this post and researching links, I see that the Blacksnakes are transitioning to A-10 Warthogs, another awesome fighter, though I prefer the Falcon.

As the anticipation grew and the clock neared 7pm, we ventured outside to watch the show. The active runway that night was 23, meaning they would takeoff to the southwest. As you can see from the airport diagram, we were located at the yellow circle, so we were very close, I would say about 300 feet from 23.

Because FWA had a fighter wing, they had a runway that was almost 12,000 feet long. As the F-16's spooled up their high pitched engines, they taxied from the east side of the field to the north end of 23. As they positioned onto the runway by pairs, the four aircraft took off one at a time, kicking in their afterburners and launching into the night sky. As we stood nearby, our bodies shook as the planes took off. It was just a fantastic experience!

As each flew down range, you could still see their afterburners, probably 30-50 miles away. It was something I will always remember and appreciate of our aviation technology and our fighting men & women of the Air Services.

I searched for a YouTube video to give you a small taste of the experience and found one that at least gives you a bit of the rumble.

Flying is a great experience and something I always wanted to learn. I finally got my 'license to learn' in 1999 and have enjoyed many flying experiences since then. Check out any nearby airport and you can usually find an introductory flight for under $100. Try it out, you might just get hooked!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081622522858570415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5311719867150922434.post-198288870657898572013-12-18T11:44:00.005-08:002013-12-18T11:58:13.745-08:00Baby it's cold outside!

And try one of our many wintery puzzles like 'Time Stands Still', a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. This puzzle brings back memories of cold, full moon, wintery nights where the snow crunches underfoot. Inside the cabin, you feel the warm glow from the crackling fire and quiet solitude of your cabin in the woods.

We just added a number of jigsaw puzzles from Willow creek Press and this one called 'Northern Renewal' reminded me of a great time spent in Canada with my son Zach in the summer of 2008. Both of us currently live in Florida and decided to make the long trek to the 'Kag' for a week of fishing and relaxation. Kag is short for Lake Kaganagiami located in Ontario, Canada. The Leuenbergers operate a fly-in lodge and outpost camps. We always opt to 'rough it' at the Kag on the American plan, where the crew feeds us twice a day at the main lodge and provides a box lunch for the day of fishing fun. They also clean your fish! The cabins are log construction, utilizing the natural resources around them and the only way to go since you have to fly everything in to the lake. They also have indoor plumbing, yahoo!

This would be our second trip to the Kag, with the first trip in 2004 in which we drove from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Only this time we were going to fly! Zach and I set out from West Palm Beach, Florida KPBI in a Cessna 172RG, which is a four seat single engine aircraft.
The first day of flight landed us in Flint, Michigan where we would spend the night with my daughter and her family. The next day, I checked the weather, said our goodbyes and launched for the Soo, Sault Ste Marie, that is. There we landed and had to wait for customs before we could get out of the plane. Luckily all we had to do was contact them on the radio, answer a couple of questions and we were good to go. Once cleared, we taxied to the FBO (fixed base operator) which is where you fuel the plane and check weather. It was kind of hazy at the time with some rain and a large cell moving towards the airport. If we launched right away we could get out before the rain really came. 3000 foot ceilings and we were good to go, so we headed north. But as we flew along, the clouds kept coming down to where we were scud running. We were flying under VFR flight rules, since I didn't have my instrument rating, which basically means you have to see where you are going and stay out of the clouds. We hugged the shore line of Lake Superior eventually getting pushed down to 500 feet above the ground and it looked like it was getting worse, so we reversed course and headed back to the Soo for the night. After checking with flight services, we discovered the Wawa triangle, which is the normal weather patterns dumping everything into the Wawa, Ontario area. They said it was normal to get low ceilings and fog.

Luckily the briefer suggested we take the southern route, which was to fly along the south edge of the lake and cross over from Houghton, Michigan to Thunder Bay, Ontario. OK, we'll give that a try! It was a very windy and bumpy day, but once we started crossing the lake, it smoothed out, though it was very unnerving crossing that much water in a single engine plane. The Cessna purred along and we made it to Thunder Bay. We kept flying north and the air traffic controller said we would see the runway after the next big hill or very small mountain. We landed without incident, fueled up and checked the weather. The briefer said there was a very large cell with lightning approaching the end of the runway to the west, so we jumped in the plane, got up to 200 feet agl (above ground level) and turned north towards Nakina. We had good instrumentation on board including a Garmin 396 which gave us virtually real time weather. We weaved around the various cells, seeing plenty of lightning, made our way past Geraldton, and spotted Nakina through the haze.
The water at the Kag is very clear and you can see some major boulders under the surface. Derek and his team place buoys to mark the boulders close to the surface. It's a lot of fun just to explore the lake and see all of the various areas, such as the river that feeds the lake. You really can't see it all in a week.
We also got a chance to catch some Lakers. Lake Trout are usually pretty deep, anywhere from 30' to 100' down, so we had to use down-riggers to get the lures to the fish. They were fun to catch but we weren't fans of the taste. Maybe need a different recipe. We did love the pike and walleye, good eating!

It's that time of year for our friends and family up north to enjoy the fall colors. What do you mean up north? Uh, north of Florida where we moved to in 2006. We traded the gray of winter for green. Even when you take those winter flights northward, you see how everything goes gray to white.

I don't miss the snow, but I do miss the fall weather in northeast Indiana, with jacket weather, the leaves turning bright orange and red, seeing your breath, and the smell of burning leaves. October also means hockey time! I grew up listening to Bob Chase, voice of the Fort Wayne Komets on WOWO, then started attending games in the early 70's. I was also a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and their blue collar style of hockey. Listening to Pat Foley and Dale Tallon was great fun. Anybody remember the wee-knee comment from Dale?

Having seen the Hawks a couple of times in the United Center before their recent success, we get to see them more here in Florida. They used to come down to play the Lightning and the Panthers every other year. Now with the new alignment, they will be here every year. We usually see them in Sunrise and then travel across the state to watch them in Tampa. Last time we saw them in Sunrise, it looked like the Blackhawks jerseys outnumbered the Panther jerseys. That was fun! Let's go Blackhawks!

But it's time to see the grandkids in Michigan and take a trip to the apple orchard for a hay ride, some cider and donuts, and watching the boys grow like weeds.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081622522858570415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5311719867150922434.post-32198102526386546712013-10-03T13:29:00.000-07:002013-10-04T13:30:26.671-07:00Fondest Memory

One of my fondest memories was going to the lake in northeast Indiana, which was about an hour drive from our home. Most think of boating, skiing, swimming, cookouts, etc... Sure we did all of those things, but one thing that would put a damper on those activities would be a rainy day. That rainy day is one of my fondest memories. I loved the rainy days and the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof. Those were the days before DirecTV and other satellite TV. This was when you had an antennae and struggled to pick up a signal. There were many years when we didn't even have a TV at the lake, so we had to find other activities, like playing cards, or some board game like monopoly or Parcheesi. You could read a book or magazine, but one of my favorites was working on jigsaw puzzles.
I can't think of a particular puzzle, but more the process of building that picture. The quiet concentration of searching for that next piece of the puzzle and looking for clues. Whether it be a shade of color or the shape of the surrounding pieces, it was always satisfying finding the next building block of your puzzle.

Today, it is more video games and TV that occupy our time. Jigsaw puzzles help to slow down the day and reduce the stresses placed upon us. It provides the opportunity to discuss the day with your family while everyone hunts those pieces.

My wife and I stop by several stores while searching for the next puzzle, but there were many times when we couldn't find anything that interested us, so we thought why not start an online store and offer many kinds of puzzles to give people more of a choice. Please check out our store and let us know what you think. We would also love to hear about your fondest memories with jigsaw puzzles.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09081622522858570415noreply@blogger.com0
